What Is a Heat Exchanger? A Cost-Cutter’s Guide to AAON Compressor, AAON Unit HVAC, Pool Heater, and Snow Blower Decisions

Let's start with a simple definition: a heat exchanger moves heat from one fluid to another without letting those fluids mix. A condenser coil in an AAON unit HVAC is a heat exchanger. The burner-to-water tube in a pool heater is a heat exchanger. Even the cooling fins on a snow blower engine are a crude heat exchanger.

The problem is that 'what is a heat exchanger' by itself isn't a buying decision. Add AAON compressor and you're in a commercial HVAC repair conversation. Add pool heater and you're in a corrosion-and-water-chemistry conversation. Add snow blower and you're probably following a bad search suggestion. Same phrase, completely different decisions.

I'm a procurement manager at a commercial facilities contractor. I've managed our HVAC parts and equipment budget for about seven years, including roughly $850,000 in 2024. My perspective is built from invoice logs, cost tracking spreadsheets, and a lot of phone calls with local suppliers.

The short engineering version

A heat exchanger transfers thermal energy between two fluids without mixing them. In an AAON unit HVAC, the heat exchangers are usually the evaporator coil and the condenser coil. Refrigerant runs on one side. Air or water runs on the other side. In a pool heater, hot combustion gas or refrigerant releases heat to the pool water through a metal barrier. In a snow blower, hot engine metal transfers heat to passing air.

But not all heat exchangers are equally serviceable, and not all of them are sold as separate parts. That's why one definition is not enough. The right maintenance advice has to branch by equipment.

Branch 1: You're searching for an AAON compressor or AAON unit HVAC

This branch is where I've spent the most money and learned the most. When an AAON unit HVAC stops cooling, the fault code often points to the compressor. The compressor is expensive, so it gets attention. The problem is that the heat exchanger can be the real reason the compressor failed.

A small refrigerant leak in an AAON evaporator or condenser coil makes the system run longer, run hotter, and short-cycle. Eventually, that can take out an AAON compressor. If you replace the compressor without pressure-testing both coils, you may be replacing another compressor in a few months.

In Q3 2023, we had a 10-year-old AAON unit HVAC with a locked compressor. The first recommendation was to quote a compressor replacement. I asked the tech to test the heat exchanger side before I signed anything. That test found a pinhole leak at a condenser coil bend. We replaced the coil and the compressor at the same time. It wasn't the cheapest first quote, but it was the cheapest total outcome.

I don't have hard data on how often leaking coils kill AAON compressors across the industry. I can only speak for our fleet. But in our fleet, it's not rare. The compressor and the heat exchanger are one system, not two independent parts.

The counterintuitive advice is this: sometimes a full AAON unit HVAC replacement is more cost-effective than an AAON compressor repair. On a 2024 rooftop job, the repair quote for a compressor plus a condenser coil came to about $11,500. A replacement AAON unit HVAC was quoted at $19,600. That put the repair at roughly 59% of replacement. The unit was 17 years old, the controls were outdated, and the coil section was already patched once. I went back and forth for a week because $11,500 still felt like a repair number. I ended up approving the replacement. The compressor-only quote looked less scary, but the total repair had enough remaining risk to make replacement the better call.

That doesn't mean you should always replace. If the same compressor failure happened on an AAON unit HVAC that was only five years old, and the coils tested clean, I would replace the compressor without a second thought. The threshold depends on the rest of the unit.

One more thing: time certainty matters. In March 2024, we needed an AAON compressor for a building that could not lose another week of cooling. The lower-cost freight option was supposed to arrive in five days. The reliable local source could get the part in two days, but it cost $425 more. I paid it. That extra money did not buy speed. It bought certainty. When the alternative is a tenant disruption or a missed deadline, an extra $425 can look very cheap.

Branch 2: You're searching for a pool heater heat exchanger

Now switch categories. If your search includes pool heater, stop applying the AAON compressor logic. A pool heater heat exchanger lives with chlorinated water, pH swings, and sometimes saltwater. The water side is the part that punishes mistakes.

A pool heater heat exchanger works the same basic way as the AAON coil: it transfers heat without mixing the hot side and the pool water. In a gas pool heater, the hot side is combustion gas. In a heat pump pool heater, the hot side is refrigerant. The pool water is the cold side, but it is not neutral. Water chemistry attacks the metal.

I don't have a large residential pool sample. My experience is mostly commercial pools and natatoriums, where the equipment is bigger and the downtime is harder to hide. What I can say anecdotally is that the pool heater projects I've reviewed failed when the replacement part was chosen on price first and material second. A less expensive heat exchanger can save money at the invoice stage and then fail during swim season. The second repair is rarely cheap.

So if you're comparing pool heater heat exchanger replacements, ask what metal it uses and whether the seller knows the actual water chemistry. And if the pool heater is down with an opening date on the calendar, pay for local stock and certainty. The seasonal cost of waiting is bigger than the rush shipping fee.

Branch 3: Your search includes a snow blower

You probably expected a different article when you searched heat exchanger. A snow blower engine is usually air-cooled, which means it relies on cooling fins and airflow to remove heat. Those fins are technically a heat exchanger. But they are not a separate replacement part in the same way an AAON coil is.

If you're shopping for a snow blower, don't let the heat exchanger phrase change what you compare. Engine size, clearing width, chute control, and tire or track type matter far more. If the snow blower already runs hot, check the cooling fins for debris and make sure the shrouds are still in place. That's more likely to fix the problem than buying a random heat exchanger part.

Which branch should you trust?

Look at the words around 'heat exchanger' in your search. If they're AAON compressor or AAON unit HVAC, treat this as a commercial refrigeration repair decision and diagnose the coils before replacing the compressor. If they're pool heater, treat this as a material and water-chemistry decision. If they're snow blower, you may not have a part to buy at all.

Bottom line

What is a heat exchanger? Technically, it is a component that moves heat between fluids without mixing them. Practically, it is a maintenance decision. In an AAON unit HVAC, the heat exchanger is part of the same system as the compressor. In a pool heater, it is the part that fights corrosion. In a snow blower, it is usually just engine design.

AAON builds commercial-grade equipment, and I've seen those units last a long time when they get routine maintenance. But no manufacturer builds a maintenance-free heat exchanger. Ignore the cleaning schedule long enough, and the repair invoice will remind you that a heat exchanger is only cheap until it isn't.
