I'll say it plainly: AAON makes some of the best commercial HVAC equipment I've worked on in 14 years in this industry. But that doesn't mean you should spec an AAON condensing unit for every project. The truth is more uncomfortable than that.

What Is a Blower Motor? The Most Common Emergency
If you're not in the trade, you might ask: what is a blower motor? It's the electric motor that spins the blower fan and pushes conditioned air through the ductwork. On a commercial rooftop unit, it runs for thousands of hours a year. It wears out. When it fails, the whole unit can go down, even if the compressor is fine.
From the outside, an emergency HVAC call looks like a race to replace the biggest part. The reality is that most downtime is caused by small things: blower motors, capacitors, dirty coils, refrigerant leaks. If the manufacturer makes those parts easy to get, the emergency is shorter.

The same logic applies to other systems. I won't tell a client to install a tankless hot water heater in a building with hard water unless they're committed to descaling the heat exchanger every year. The technology is fine. But if the maintenance isn't there, “best” becomes “expensive and annoying.” Too many buyers choose equipment based on marketing, not on their own building's reality.
The Dewalt Blower Test
Here's a trick I often use: before any diagnostic call on an AAON condensing unit, our tech takes a Dewalt blower—the same cordless blower you might use for leaf cleanup—and clears the condenser coil. It sounds too simple. But I've walked onto a roof at 96 degrees, seen a unit tripping on high pressure, and watched a five-minute blow-out bring the pressure down to normal.
That kind of simple maintenance prevents the expensive emergency. And it's exactly the kind of operational habit that makes an expensive AAON HVAC unit pay for itself. If you don't maintain it, no brand will save you.
What most people don't realize is that lead times for “premium” brands are often inflated by buffer time. A good distributor can usually find an AAON condenser coil in a regional warehouse, especially for common tonnages. You just have to ask the right questions.
What About the Counterargument?
You might be thinking: “This guy works emergencies, so all he sees is failures. Doesn't that bias him against every brand?” Fair point. But the opposite is also true: I see which brands fail and which ones are easy to fix. AAON units fail less often than the average commercial unit I work on, and when they do fail, I can almost always get parts without custom fabrication. That's not an advertisement; it's an operational observation.
I also make mistakes. Even after choosing an AAON condensing unit for a critical replacement, I kept second-guessing. What if the roof curb footprint didn't match? What if the MCA didn't match the electrical service? I want to say the submittal came back in two days, but don't quote me on that—it might have been three. The point is, even a good decision involves uncertainty.
My Honest Bottom Line
AAON HVAC equipment is excellent for buildings that need robust, serviceable, commercial-grade gear and have a maintenance plan to match. It's not the right answer for every small building, and it's definitely not the right answer if you expect to install it and ignore it for ten years.
So if you ask me to recommend a condensing unit for a 30,000-square-foot warehouse that runs 24/7, I'll recommend AAON and write a maintenance contract to go with it. If you ask me for a one-step fix for a 1,200-square-foot office with no in-house HVAC staff, I'll suggest something simpler and more forgiving.
At least, that's been my experience with 5- to 50-ton commercial systems. I've learned that “best” is a function of your building, your budget, and your willingness to maintain what you buy. The nameplate alone doesn't decide it.
