In March 2024, I got a call from a facility manager whose AAON condensing unit had thrown a fan POF failure and shut down for the third time that week. The tenant inspection was 36 hours away, and the contract held a penalty clause that would have made a quick part swap look cheap by comparison. He had already ordered a replacement condenser fan motor. Then he asked me if I thought the motor was the problem.
I didn't answer the way he expected. I asked about pressure drop across the filter. There was a pause. That's when I knew the fan motor was about to become an expensive paperweight.
What a Fan POF Failure Actually Means
POF stands for proof of flow. It's a safety interlock, not a diagnostic report. On an AAON condensing unit, the controller energizes the fan circuit and then waits for the POF switch to close. That switch is a differential pressure switch. It has two sensing lines, one on each side of the airflow path, and it only closes when it feels enough pressure difference to prove movement. If the switch doesn't close within the prove-on time, the controller aborts the start sequence and logs fan POF failure.
Here's the part that surprises a lot of facility managers: the fan can be spinning at full speed and the unit can still log the alarm. A blocked filter, a collapsed return duct, a dirty microchannel coil, a loose belt, a kinked sensing line, or a failed switch can all create the same failure. The code is not telling you which vent is clogged or which belt is loose. It's only telling you that the controller did not verify airflow before trying to protect the condenser.
The POF switch is not a motor status sensor. It is an airflow proving switch. If it doesn't prove airflow, the unit is doing exactly what it was designed to do: shut down before a coil freezes or a compressor overheats.
What to Check Before You Order Anything
When I'm triaging a fan POF failure, I don't start with the motor. I start with the least expensive and most common causes. If the air path is blocked, a new motor won't fix the pressure difference. The list in my head looks like this: filter condition, coil cleanliness, belt tension and condition, return and supply duct integrity, POF switch tubing, and switch continuity. You can check five of those six items in under an hour with no special tools.
Only after that do I pull up the AAON service manual for the exact unit and check the control sequence. It's not the most exciting way to spend an hour, but it is the reason we don't generate callbacks on every fan POF failure call.

I've handled hundreds of rush service calls over the years. The fan POF failure is one of the most common alarms I see on commercial condensing units, and the number of times the motor itself was actually dead is remarkably low. The numbers said replace the motor, and my gut said check the airflow path first. After three failed attempts with a discount vendor in 2023, our company now requires a standard diagnostic sequence before any motor gets approved.
On one call, the customer had already paid for a condenser fan motor replacement from another company. The unit failed again a week later with the same fan POF alarm. When I removed the filter cover, the filter was completely clogged. The motor was installed and turning just fine. The old motor was still in the back of the van, probably on its way to being scrapped.

I get why people confuse this with a simpler problem. A tankless hot water heater can throw an error code that points to a flame rod, and you can sometimes reset it and move on. A Google Nest thermostat will show you a temperature graph and let you change settings from your phone. Those are consumer devices. A commercial HVAC unit is a different animal. The fan POF failure is a hard interlock, not a suggestion coded into an app.
When a facility manager asks if a Nest thermostat can be wired to override the alarm, the honest answer is: don't. The POF interlock is tied to the compressor start sequence. Bypassing it to make the alarm go away is how coils freeze and compressor valves break.
How to Test an AC Compressor After a POF Failure
Once the airflow issue is fixed and the alarm clears, the job isn't finished. The POF shutdown might have saved the compressor from a bad situation, but it doesn't guarantee the compressor is healthy. On a commercial AAON condensing unit, I add a few more steps.
- Check continuity between each compressor winding terminal and ground. Anything below about 1 megohm is a red flag.

- Start the unit and watch the amp draw against the nameplate. A scroll compressor that's leaking internally will pull lower amps while the discharge temperature climbs.
- Monitor discharge line temperature and liquid line pressure for at least thirty minutes under load. An internal pressure relief valve that tripped during the POF shutdown may not reset by simply clearing the code.
The last item is the one that gets missed. A compressor can pass every electrical test and still have an internal mechanical problem that doesn't show up until the unit has run long enough to build heat. Don't hand the building back to the owner until the unit has cycled at full load once.
The Real Cost of Skipping the Diagnostic
Here's where I get blunt. A fan POF failure is not a flat-rate repair. It's a diagnosis that needs to be done in the right order. If a technician skips the airflow check and goes straight to the motor, you'll pay for the motor, the labor, the refrigerant check, and then the second service call when the alarm returns. The total cost is always higher than the honest diagnostic would have been.
The vendor who lists all fees upfront, even when the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end. That's why I've learned to ask what's NOT included before I ask for a price. A written diagnostic procedure should list every test that will be performed. If it doesn't, the price is just a starting point, not a promise.
What a Transparent Quote Looks Like
When you call for help with an AAON fan POF failure, ask for a diagnostic checklist. It should include static pressure across the filter and coil, POF switch continuity, control voltage, condenser fan amp draw, compressor amp draw, and discharge line temperature. If a contractor can't explain what the test is for, that's a red flag. If they can, you've found someone who's chased this code before.

An AAON condensing unit that logs a fan POF failure is trying to tell you that airflow wasn't proved, not that the fan motor quit. Give me a call like that from a facility manager who has already ordered a motor, and I'll ask if the filter is clean before I ask if the motor spins. The filter is cheaper. After every one of these calls, I still second-guess myself. What if the POF switch had an intermittent open when the filter was okay? I don't relax until the unit has gone through a full start sequence and run at full load for thirty minutes. But when it does, the spare motor goes back to the distributor, and the invoice reflects the actual fix, not the guess.
