I manage purchasing for a 150-person manufacturing company—roughly $350,000 a year across 12 vendors, reporting to both operations and finance. 1. What's the difference between an evaporator coil and a condenser coil?
Short version: the evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air inside your building, and the condenser coil releases that heat to the outside air (or into a water loop, on water source systems). They sit on opposite sides of the same refrigeration cycle, and you can't swap one for the other. That's why the evaporator coil vs condenser coil distinction is the first thing I verify before ordering anything.
The evaporator coil is the cold-side coil. Warm indoor air blows across it, and refrigerant inside absorbs the heat—which is why the air coming out the other side is cooler. A cracked heat exchanger lets combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, mix into the supply air. That makes it a safety issue, not just an efficiency issue.
Warning signs our contractor uses: a sudden drop in heating output, condensation or fuel smell around the unit, or elevated carbon monoxide readings on a combustion test. A scheduled fall inspection catches most cracks before they become a mid-winter failure. I wish I had tracked exactly how long our original heat exchanger lasted, but I can say anecdotally that one of our two units needed a replacement in its eighth year, and it was flagged during routine maintenance, not a breakdown. Direct answer: if you're asking about a small self-contained freezer—a lab freezer, a plug-in cooler, a small walk-in—AAON is the wrong tool. AAON builds commercial HVAC equipment: water source heat pumps, chillers, rooftop units, plus the coils and condensing units that go with them. That's capacity-focused gear designed for space conditioning, not for holding a room at 10°F.
There's a real difference between air conditioning and refrigeration. An AAON unit moves heat out of a conditioned space to keep it comfortable. A true freezer needs dedicated refrigeration equipment designed for low suction temperatures and defrost operation—requirements that don't exist in a standard comfort-cooling system. If a vendor tells you "we can handle that with this one unit," I'd ask a lot of questions. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. One vendor who told me "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else.
The one crossover case: if your facility has an existing AAON water source heat pump loop and you're adding a cold room, the heat pump can condition the space to a certain point—but the sub-freezing portion still needs dedicated refrigeration. That's a hybrid design for an engineer and an AAON rep to review together. For a standalone small freezer, buy a freezer. I'd give the reverse advice to someone asking a commercial refrigeration company to air-condition an office.
5. How often should air filters be changed on AAON units?
Every three months, for most commercial facilities. If there's construction dust nearby, a busy road, or wildfire season, shorten it to once a month. If you're running MERV 13 or higher filters, check the pressure drop monthly—filter loading doesn't always line up neatly with the calendar.
The filter schedule is less of a mechanical problem and more of a communication problem. Our previous admin tracked it in her head; nobody else knew the schedule. In winter 2023, we ran one of our AAON units with a filter that was close to six months old. Static pressure climbed, the evaporator coil froze over, and what should have been a $30 filter change became a $600 service call plus three days of production at 52°F. One thing to verify when you buy filters: the performance claims. 6. Should I buy AAON parts from an authorized distributor or a cheaper online reseller?
Short answer: it depends on the part.
For major components—heat exchangers, condenser coils, evaporator coils, condensing units, controls—I buy from an authorized AAON distributor. For consumables—filters, belts, fuses, sensors—a good commercial HVAC supply house works fine.
The reason is simple. With a major component, I need correct fit, warranty coverage, and a person to call if something goes wrong. Authorized distributors have the AAON engineering data and return policies to back that up. An online reseller might be 20–30% cheaper, but I've been burned by aftermarket "compatible" parts that were not, in fact, compatible.
In 2024, I went back and forth for two weeks between a reseller and an authorized distributor on a replacement condenser coil. The reseller was 30% cheaper and could ship same day. The distributor had a longer lead time but guaranteed fit and warranty.
