When AAON Doesn't Make Sense
I'll be straight with you: AAON isn't the answer for every building. If you're running a small office in a mild climate, a standard commercial packaged unit is probably fine. Paying for AAON's heavy-duty build quality only makes sense if you'll actually benefit from it.
Where AAON shines, in my assessment:
- Water source heat pump systems. That's their wheelhouse.
- Buildings that need precise humidity control.
- Applications where serviceability matters. AAON's panel layout and access points are noticeably better than a lot of what I review.
- Teams with in-house maintenance staff who can change filters and clean coils on schedule.
One more thing worth noting: AAON's aftermarket parts program is a real strength. I check parts availability for every project before specifying equipment. If a component fails in year seven, you can generally buy the replacement instead of replacing the whole unit.
