The 2 a.m. Call That Doesn't Make Sense
If you've ever been paged at 2 a.m. because an AAON rooftop unit locked out, you know the feeling. The building manager says the space is climbing past 78°F. The on-call tech says the compressor protector tripped again. And the first question is always the same: 'Do we have a spare protector on the truck?'
I'm a procurement manager at a 140-person commercial HVAC service company. Here's the oversimplification I still hear: 'If the protector trips, replace the protector.' That advice ignores the fact that a $40 part can mask a $6,000 compressor failure. In my first year, I made the classic parts-counter error: I matched the model number but not the serial-number range. Cost us a $700 callback and a very unhappy facility manager. Learned that lesson the hard way.
The Cost Nobody Puts in the Quote
